UPDATES
Clay County: The County Commissioners have approved the countywide trails plan created last year by the Clay Community Bike Trails group, operating within the Clay Community Parks Association 501c3 not-for-profit, and Thrive West Central. The group now plans to define priorities, work to refine details, and pursue funding to begin implementation.
Putnam County: Putnam Parks & Pathways upgraded the signage on their Vandalia Trail while they and Greencastle Parks & Recreation continued maintaining the most miles of open trail along the NRHT of the 8 counties across the state. Greencastle is also finalizing engineering work and property acquisition for their 1.8-mile Campus Link Trail extension across the rest of the west side of the city, connecting to and upgrading to paved the existing Phase 1 of the Putnam Nature Trail. This project is funded by the State’s Next Level Trails grant program.
Hendricks County: Hendricks County Parks & Recreation began construction in late summer on Phase 1 of their Vandalia Trail section in the west side of the town of Clayton, expecting completion this year. They are also applying for grants to extend that trail ~2 miles west from Clayton on property they already own.
Indy’s west side: The White Lick Creek and Vandalia Trail Alliance (WLCVTA) held its annual Airport Loop Bike Ride in October raising funds for the two west side trail projects thanks to the many generous sponsors and participants. In the meantime, Indianapolis DPW selected its design firm for the Vandalia Trail from the Plainfield border to downtown Indianapolis with design work expected to start in early 2025. Sadly, Leonard Stringer, president and founder of WLCVTA, passed away in early December and will be greatly missed by family, the organization, the community and all who knew him.
Hancock County: The Pennsy Trails of Hancock County not-for-profit organization’s volunteers cleared the Pennsy Trail route in 2024 on the additional mile of corridor acquired from CR 400 W to CR 300 W, now prepared for the next stage of construction. Visit their linked web site and Facebook page for the latest details.
Henry County: Healthy Communities of Henry County has cleared and is applying for construction grants for their NRHT corridor in and just east of the town of Dunreith where trail users currently divert to local streets and a short section of US 40 to connect between the Lewisville and Raysville halves of their 9-mile trail corridor.
