Hello cross-Indiana NRHT friends,

Progress has continued in on the cross-state trail initiative along this historic transportation corridor.  See the map below for the overall status, followed by the descriptions of recent updates and a list of upcoming events.  For a detailed interactive map, visit this Googlemaps link.

UPDATES

Vigo County
Dan reported that Terre Haute has removed bumps in the trail and is
robustly sealing a long section of the trail near the Blakely trailhead.

Clay County
Kurt reported that the Clay County Bike Trails group had met last summer
and late fall, but they had not reported out. He will follow up.

Putnam County
Sara reported that Greencastle had begun trail clearing work near the west
end of the Campus Link Trail extension funded by a Next Level Trails grant.

Hendricks County
Greg reported that, applicable also to Putnam and Marion Counties, a
Vandalia Trail logo was unveiled in December as part of the new Greater
Indy Trailways initiative. Greg has posted it on the Vandalia Trail web site
and Facebook page.

  • Marion County
    Greg reported that WLCVTA is still working to complete a Vandalia Trail
    easement from Extra Space Storage at the Hendricks County line. The
    NRHT, Inc. board had discussed by e-mail the concept of extending its
    property liability insurance policy, currently for Putnam County, to this
    easement area, if desired by WLCVTA. Greg will present to WLCVTA later
    this month an annual fee structure of $100 / participant administrative fee,
    plus the remainder of the premium divided up by acreage.
    Indianapolis DPW canceled its plan to apply in November for Vandalia Trail
    construction funds from the MPO. They now look to apply in late 2026.
    Paul reported that Cumberland held a ribbon cutting for its “Trail of Light”
    mural on the Pennsy Trail surface near Meijer.
  • Hancock County
    Paul reported that emergency locator information signs are being installed at
    0.1-mile intervals along trails throughout the county.
    Paul noted that the new Pennsy Run Club has been attracting 40 participants
    each Saturday since February.
    Paul reported on Pennsy Trails of Hancock County activities:
    o Lined more parking spots at the CR 400 W trailhead
    o Created a children’s playhouse as park of Eagle Station
    o Plans honeysuckle removal volunteer sessions April 11, 18, 25
    Paul reported on Greenfield activities:
    o Wayfinding signs installed on trail in Brandywine Park.
    o Small pavilion to be installed at east end of trail, CR 400 E.
    o Will be seal coating the entire 5.4 miles of Pennsy Trail.
  • Henry County
    Greg noted that Jeff Ray contracted final rustic grading of the newly cleared
    0.4 miles of NRHT from Williams Street to the Lewisville Cemetery and that
    section is now open.
    Greg reported that Jeff is working on the trail bridge east of Dunreith over
    Buck Creek. This bridge will eliminate the need to divert to US 40 in that
    area.
